Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
A: Autism Spectrum Disorder—more commonly referred to as “autism”—is a pervasive developmental disorder that is marked by the presence of impaired social interaction and communication and a restricted repertoire of activities and interests.

Q: What are the symptoms?
A: Individuals with autism may have a range of behavioral symptoms including impulsivity, hyperactivity, aggressiveness, self-injurious behavior, temper tantrums, and often appear aloof and detached. They may show unusual responses to sensory stimuli as observed by a lack of response to pain or a hypersensitivity to particular sounds. In addition, these individuals often have gastro-intestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, constipation, severe self-limiting diet and/or food sensitivities. Many behaviors once considered simply “autistic” and hopeless, are now proven to be caused by the discomfort children experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Q: How prevalent is autism?
A: According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in every 150 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism.  Autism affects more children than AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined. Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability, with the number of cases increasing 10-17% per year.

Q: What is biomedical treatment?
A: The biomedical approach treats autism as a medical disease rather than a behavioral disorder.

Q: What is the main benefit of biomedical treatment?
A: By improving brain and body health, children are able to learn, making interventions such as Relationship Development Intervention (RDI), Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) as well as Speech and Occupational Therapies more effective.

Q: Is biomedical treatment offered in Oklahoma?
A: Oklahoma currently does not have a facility and medical staff solely dedicated to biomedical treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Aaron’s Bridge was founded to bring such a facility to Oklahoma.
